‘Breakfast of Champions’ is a record that came together from a joke that was shared one evening when Jarrett Gilgore and Dave Treut were hanging out after a gig at writer Cisco Bradley’s house. Kilgore Trout being the main character of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel ‘Breakfast of Champions’ We decided we should start a band called Gilgore/Treut’s ‘Breakfast of Champions’ We played a gig at the now defunct WindUp Space in Baltimore, as Formanek, Ballou and Gilgore lived there, Malaby and Treut drove down from NYC to make the date. They had so much fun the first outing, they decided to do another and record it!

The relationships and the shared collaborations run deep in this crew of master improvisers. Malaby, Formanek and Ballou have clocked years together as collaborators. Treut was 19 when he started working with Malaby some 25 years ago. Jarrett Gilgore had just graduated from Peabody Conservatory and was a musical catalyst and spark of the Baltimore experimental music scene. The record is an edited version of the two sets we played at the WindUp Space in April of 2017.

‘Breakfast of Champions’ straddles many lines of group improvisation stemming from Free Jazz and Improvised Music, all nodding to the avant garde. But if you listen closely the chordless quintet has an uncanny knack for creating melodies and making an improvisation sound like a composition. That’s what you get when you sign up these titans of improv. A democratic process, knowing when to support, when to go against the grain, when to lay out, when to push the soloist or whether the soloist prefers to stay inside the sound, all aesthetic decisions made in the moment to further the larger compositional framework teetering in the balance.
